Retired – Now What – Social Media by Janet Callaway | The Natural Networker

Retired, find you and your friends moving in different directions, losing touch? Have you considered social media as a means to stay in touch? The Internet is not just e-mails and pictures. You can use online social media to bring your community back together, even if everyone lives in another State or even in another Country. And it's free.

Not only that, social media makes everything from shopping, researching, talking to friends, making new friends, convenient and fun. While main street merchants may be more interested in Generation X online merchants are becoming ever increasingly interested in us.

Why? Because senior networking is where the online socializing and home business action is. Seniors are finding out that social networking is safe, convenient and satisfying. If you think social networking is only for teenagers and young adults, you'd better think again. Ditto for the starting home business networking businesses.

Why has senior social networking doubled in the last year? One answer is simple, adults over the age of 50 are the fastest growing segment of the population. The over 50 generations, because of their sheer volume significantly influence every market they touch. Online entrepreneurs have taken notice and are making the online social networking experience acceptable to the senior population.

Seniors are taking full advantage of the attention and opportunities. Why are online entrepreneurs so interested in the over 50 population? Aside from the fact that they control the wealth of the nation, studies have found that the 52 - 62 year olds spend the most money online. Online and person-to-person marketing is now firmly established in the over 50 age groups with over 73% of those online, shopping online.

One big reason marketers love seniors is that they exhibit social media loyalty. That is the “stickiness” of the sites they use is significant. While most online users click from site to site studies show that, of the seniors that use networking sites, almost half (44%) use them EVERY day. That's BIG! The loyalty exhibited by seniors to their senior social networking sites is going to result in them getting more and more attention from online entrepreneurs.

Almost half (47%) of adults 50 to 64 use social networking sites. That is up from only 25% in April of 2009. And an astounding 89% of seniors, those over 65, send or read e-mails. Over half of those over 50 read online news. Seniors are discovering that social networks like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have a place in their lives.

In my opinion, this means we are going to see a huge increase in senior social networking to provide additional financial security for themselves and their children. What do I mean? Seniors use the Internet to reconnect with people from their past, seek information and support with medical issues, chat with the grandkids or make new friends with similar interests. Social networking is all about building and re-building relationships. As the seniors become more firmly entrenched online they will discover the advantages of participating in a social online networking business and will be looking for Home Business Ideas.

Because of this, I believe the prospects for the online senior community are very exciting. Also, I believe that the best online opportunity for seniors is network marketing. A network marketing company creates a product, performs all the administrative record keeping, manufacturing, warehousing, shipping and customer service functions while, the senior independent distributor, only pays a small fee to join. The senior independent representative spends their time and energy building a wholesale business, much like a wholesale buying club, with an organization of business builders with whom they want to work. The senior works with a network of friends, family and close associates while they build financial freedom for the entire network together. It doesn't get much simpler or rewarding.
